TURBOdesign1 - Theory & Flow Model

Basic Algorithm

  • Turbomachinery blade is represented by a sheet of vorticity
  • The strength of the sheet of vorticity is rVθ
(rVθ is circumferentially averaged angular momentum)
  • The blade is derived by assuming free-slip conditions.

 Flow Model - TD1Flow Model - TD1

Assumption

  • Inviscid
  • Potential flow (but inlet shear is acceptable)

Calculation of 3D flow fields

  • Main flow - stream function (2D Poisson Eq.)

  • Blade thickness is simply taken account as a blockage
  • Periodic flow - Fourier series (3D Poisson Eq.)
  • Numerical grid is required only on the meridional plane

Definition of rVθ distribution

  • Derived by integrating distribution
